How to Lay Culvert Stretcher Pavers

(Please note that this is only a suggestion on how to lay this paver. Other methods may be used).

Prepare area to be paved to the required depth (this includes removal of vegetation).

Place peg in the ground at the centre point of the proposed circle.

Tie a piece of string around the peg. Make the string 500mm long and tie a pencil or peg to the outside point and mark a 1 metre circle on the ground.

A 300mm x 300mm concrete strip footing must be poured to prevent the root system of the plant to be used, from lifting the pavers. (The culvert stretcher paver will be mortared onto this strip footing at a later time).

Dig out the footing to the appropriate size (as above). Place 2 rings of 10mm deformed bar into trench before pouring concrete. One bar should have a diameter of 1200mm and the other bar should be 1400mm in diameter. Pour the concrete. The level of the concrete should come up to 10mm below the underneath side of the pavers.

Once concrete is dry, lay the body (standard) pavers. Lay these pavers so that the overlap the concrete strip footing.

Using the peg and string with a marking pencil, mark a circle 730mm from the peg, onto the top of the body pavers (this measurement comes from a 500mm radius circle plus 230mm for the length of the paver).

Before removing the body pavers, place the culvert stretcher pavers around the drawn line to make sure the circle is correct.

If this is correct, remark the line with a permanent marking pen. If not correct, adjust the pencil line to suit and then mark with marking pen.

Remove the culvert stretcher pavers. The body pavers can now be removed and cut with a diamond saw to the marked line.

Using a mortar mix of 5:1 sand to mortar, mortar the culvert stretcher pavers onto the strip footing with a 10mm mortar bed.

Make sure that the culvert stretcher pavers come up to the same height as the body pavers.

If there are any mortar stains on the pavers, they may be cleaned using a solution of hydrochloric acid and water (10 parts water : 1 part acid). Cleaning must be done no more than 36 hours after the laying of the pavers. Please wet down the pavers before and after using the acid. You must be very careful with using acid (don't splash it around everywhere), as it can do more damage that it solves. Hydrochloric acid will only remove mortar stains - nothing else.
